Trained at Leeds College of Art, he worked in advertising as an art director and in 1966 established Richard Downer Limited working as a design consultant and illustrator for over 40 years. He was a Fellow of the Society of Industrial Artists and Designers and Fellow and past President of the Society of Typographic Designers.

He continues to draw and paint at his studio Inkerman Press in North London.
