From a collection of early 20th century hand carved wooden 'Casting Moulds’. These horse moulds were used as the template by artisans to create ornamental pieces. The wooden carvings were initially wrapped in papier-mache (small parts are still visible on some of the carvings) and when dry, cut in half to release the wooden cast (hence the visible cut marks on some of the carvings). The two halves would then have been joined together to create the whole figure, before being pained, covered in resin or gilded etc.
